H.264 and H.265 (also called HEVC) are both video codecs — the method used to shrink a video file down for storage or upload. The difference isn't really about which one is "better"; it's a specific tradeoff between file size, compatibility, and how much processing it takes to create the file.

H.265 is worth reaching for when file size is the actual constraint — a slow upload connection, limited device storage, or sending a long export to someone else.

If your export tool offers both, test file size before assuming

The gap between the two isn't identical on every piece of footage — high-motion, high-detail clips tend to show a bigger H.265 size advantage than simple, static shots. A quick side-by-side export on your actual footage is more reliable than a general rule.
