How to Slow Down Just Part of a Video, Not the Whole Clip

The instinct is to cut the clip into two pieces — normal speed, then a separate slow-motion piece — and stitch them back together. It works, but it's more steps than necessary, and the seam between the two pieces is often where a viewer notices the edit instead of just feeling it.

The one-clip way

Most modern mobile editors let you set speed changes inside a single clip instead of only per whole clip. Look for a speed curve, speed ramp, or "curve mode" option (as opposed to a single speed slider that applies to the entire clip) — that's the tool that lets one continuous piece of footage speed up, slow down, and speed back up without ever being cut.

   Identify the exact moment, not just the general area

   Scrub to the specific frame where the highlight happens — this is where the slow section should be centered, not just "somewhere in the middle."

   Use a curve preset that matches the moment's position

   Moment near the start of the clip → fast-to-slow won't fit; look for a preset like "Hero" (slow-fast-slow) that puts the slow dip in the middle instead.

   Keep the slow section short

   A half-second to one-second slow dip usually reads as intentional emphasis. Longer than that and it starts to feel like the video is dragging.

   Check audio pitch after adjusting speed

   If there's music or dialogue on the clip, confirm pitch preservation is on before exporting — otherwise the slow section will drop in pitch, not just speed.
